The Summit window is here!! Over the past two weeks, it has been tough on the Everest aspirants. Between a cyclone and a stubborn jet stream, poor weather with extreme winds have held people in place.
Extreme winds topping out at over 80 mph have destroyed tents and supplies caches at the highest camps. The rope fixers that put the fixed lines to the summit have been stalled at 26,feet on the Nepal side and 23,feet on the Tibet side.
Without the ropes in, few will attempt the summit. However, all is not lost and this weekend the winds are forecasted to calm and we might see a large wave of summits, not only on Everest but across the entire Himalaya Mountains Range including Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Makalu, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Shishapangma.
Everest is crowded this spring on the Nepal side. The Nepal Government issued a record permits to foreigners, adding at least one support Sherpa per climber, that puts over people on the mountain.
On the Tibet side, that has traditionally fewer climbers, permits were issued to foreigners so that side will see around people climbing.
The previous record was last year with total summits on all routes. Their proposed route starts with a climb straight up a degree angle, 6,foot narrow rock gulley.
At times, they will navigate icy rock slabs. The Nepalese government said Wednesday that to avoid traffic jams and unruly behavior at the summit, it was considering changing the rules on who could climb the mountain.
Ang Tshering Sherpa, the former president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, estimated that the bodies of at least a third of all who have died on Everest remain there.
Some of them are in pieces, pulled apart by avalanches, he said. Stronger is the inspiring real life story of Jeff Bauman, an ordinary man who captured the hearts of his city and the world to become a symbol of hope after surviving the Boston Marathon bombing.
A successful investment banker struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. With the help of a customer service rep and her young son, he starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.

A dramatization of the disaster in April , when the offshore drilling rig called the Deepwater Horizon exploded, resulting in the worst oil spill in American history.

A soldier wakes up in someone else's body and discovers he's part of an experimental government program to find the bomber of a commuter train within 8 minutes.
Shot documentary-style, this film follows the daily grind of two young police officers in LA who are partners and friends, and what happens when they meet criminal forces greater than themselves.
Jack Hall, paleoclimatologist, must make a daring trek from Washington, D. On the morning of May 10, , climbers from two commercial expeditions start their final ascent toward the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth.
With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever encountered by man.
Challenged by the harshest conditions imaginable, the teams must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against nearly impossible odds.
Everest is a film that tells the story of the Mount Everest disaster, in which a climbing expedition is devastated by a severe storm.
To start the film is beautiful; the director of photography Salvatore Totino presented the size and scale of the environment beautifully with multiple aerial shots.
Totino has a clear and linear style, which is refreshing after the summer, which with the exception of a couple of films, has been dominated by shaky-cam and extremely quick cuts.
The dialogue in the film stands out, however the plot does not. The characters were underdeveloped, partially due to the lack of introduction that is given to our main characters; this combined with the slow pace of the first act causes the film to drag.
However it should be noted that the film makes a point of showing the process of preparing to climb Everest. The second act is fine, not great though and is intense especially during the storm and finally the film just finishes, which really throws you out of the film.
Although none of the performances in the film were award-worthy they still were acceptable and in some cases quite good. Jason Clarke and Josh Brolin had the meatiest roles, and they both provided good performances.
However out of the two, Jason Clarke provided the best performance. The side characters were forgettable, with the exception of Doug John Hawkes and Yasuko Naoko Mori , with Doug being a postman and Yasuko finally completing the seven summits, two things which helped to distinguish them.
Everyone in the film was 'care-beared', thankfully, and they had to be otherwise it would impossible to tell who you were looking at.
One part of production that deserves praise in this film is the lighting department who did a superb job on presenting a clear environment; especially during the storm.
A quick side note- the score of the film was forgettable. Ultimately, Everest is an intense drama thriller that has its problems, however is still beautiful to watch, I wouldn't purchase it on 3D Blu-ray, as after watching it in 3D I didn't find anything spectacular or noteworthy, however I would consider buying it on Blu-ray.

They discredit climbing as a sport. Also with the extream winds and snow, the ladders would need to be in different spots for different years.
The icefall ladders are installed each year. Speaking of ladders, the second ladder and that gaggle of ropes on the step looks like a real danger.
Wonder if the crack to the right might not be easier? There was talk of a ladder at the Hillary Step before it changed with the earthquake.
What i find most disturbing that is eluded to in these comments is the high number of deaths related to a couple of treking companies.
Surely this needs to be looked into by the authorities as to whether they bear some responsibility.
Are they allowing inexperienced or incapable climbers on a summit expedition? Mount Everest is a natural selection moron magnet.
Morons with too much money and time on their hands. This would be a boon to the mountaineering industry of the country as well as weeding out inexperienced climbers.
Such preventative measures will help reduce deaths on the summit, and will also give Nepal a reputation for efficiently regulating climbing.
What I would add is that the pre-qualifying summits in Nepal must be within 18mos and 60 days of the Everest permit. Total permit revenue to Nepal would sore upwards as would Sherpa employment and while crowds would return to Everest within a couple years they would be experienced.
That shot from the south summit towards the Hillary Step is shocking. I thought at first it was photo shopped. And the travel times from the South Col…too long, very dangerous.
Fifty more feet. After down-climbing a few body lengths, I paused on a shattered block of pale brown limestone. The cliff was about eight feet high and as steep as a playground slide.
It would have been inconsequential almost anywhere else, but up here, in my depleted state, alone and without a rope, it scared me.
I looked up the gully and thought about climbing back up the way I had come. Prudence dictated that I turn back, but my curiosity was stronger.
With the pick of my ax still in the snow, I stepped down onto the rock, where my crampons skittered, making a scratching noise like fingernails on a chalkboard.
At the bottom of the cliff, I took a few deep breaths. Ten feet to my right was a small alcove hemmed by a rock wall a bit taller and steeper than the one I had just climbed down.
The middle of the wall was striped with a vein of dark brown rock with a narrow crack in the middle.
Apparently it was an optical illusion. The crack in the center was only nine inches wide. Far too narrow for a person to crawl inside.
And it was empty. The slope was too steep for me to sit down, so I planted my right foot sideways in a patch of snow and leaned my left knee against the mountain.
Hunching over my ax, with my chin on my chest, I sucked on my oxygen mask, trying to clear the fog from my head. When I looked back up, blinking in the midday sun, the crevice was still empty.
High above, the summit shimmered against a pale blue sky, immutable and indifferent, as always, to those who sought to unlock its secrets.
And like everyone else who had ever tried, we were left with more questions than answers. What happened to Irvine that day?
Where did he finally come to rest? Had someone removed his body from the slope, or had the jet stream or an avalanche swept it into oblivion?
To all of these questions, I had no answers. The only thing I could now say for sure was that the mystery of Mallory and Irvine would endure—perhaps forever.
And that was OK. We searched for a camera that could rewrite history. Read Caption. By Mark Synnott. Photographs by Renan Ozturk.
This story appears in the July issue of National Geographic magazine. In this hand-tinted image, a smiling Irvine at far left stands next to Mallory, who rests his boot on E.

For decades the Chinese government has encouraged Tibetan nomads to settle in towns like Gyirong.
A tent city in town shelters people displaced by a strong earthquake in I turned to face him. I waved at him.
But he implored me to stop. Nicknamed the "gravel parking lot" by the team, Everest Base Camp can be reached directly by motor vehicle, unlike its counterpart on the Nepali side, which requires climbers to make a multiday trek on foot.
In this four-day time-lapse image, yellow tents are lined up for expedition members. After the dinner rush, the cooking crew relaxes with visitors.
Nepali cook Bire Tamang back right and his Tibetan assistant Chhumbi right prepared hearty meals of rice and lentils, soup, and noodles for 30 to 40 people a day, including Da Gelje Dawa Sherpa back left , who led the support team, and Pasang Gomba Sherpa, a private guide.
He chuckled. He paused for a few seconds. British expedition routes , , and NG expedition route Everest 29, ft 8, m.

Snow dusts the rocky Miracle Highway on the East Rongbuk Glacier as a group of climbers middle right makes the mile trek between Base Camp and Advanced Base Camp past bladelike ice fins.
I pointed to the red circle on the giant photo. It was a fluke, in many ways, that Irvine had even made it to Everest.
The top of the world seems as distant as the Milky Way from Advanced Base Camp, where more than people sprawl across a quarter mile of glacial moraine.
The summit is the rightmost peak, barely visible beyond the snowy saddle of the North Col at right. Bound for the North Col, climbers typically spend a night or two at 23, feet to acclimate themselves before a later try at the summit.
