Joe Morgenstern. The Witches is an empty and joyless spectacle; a perfectly staged and horribly realized CGI banality. Zemeckis at an all time low.

Robert Zemeckis' creepy remake is not as bewitching as it should be. Susan Granger. Lurches inelegantly between doe-eyed sentiment to child-friendly spookiness to comic slapstick, and all three modes are done poorly.

Tim Brayton. Zemeckis's film, which updates Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, seems so dull to me that I feel like I'm drinking a tasteless, magic-free potion made by witches with computer-generated mice.

Yasser Medina. Little kids are bound to have nightmares when the witches' mouths contort into something that looks like Pennywise from the It franchise, but it's also too silly by half for tweens who might enjoy the darker side of Halloween cinema.

Kiko Martinez. The Witches is a simple story made grandly entertaining with all its crafty ingredients firmly in place. Enough to cast its magic spell on children of all ages.

Super Reviewer. And now the Grand High Witch is planning to get rid of every child in England - can anybody stop them? It continues to feature in lists dedicated to the scariest children's books more than 30 years after it was first published.

Especially around Halloween. When he was a child himself, Roald Dahl used to spend every summer holiday with his family in Norway, where he was inspired by bedtime stories of witches and magic.

Roald dedicated the book to his wife, Liccy. The main difference between the film and the original story is the ending - in the book, there is no spell cast to change the boy's state back to what it was before the witches found him.

The film also gives its central character the name Luke, whereas in the book we don't find out the name of either the boy who narrates the story or his grandmother.

Things happened to me that will probably make you scream when you read about them. That can't be helped. The truth must be told.

She is without mercy. All other Witches are petrified of her. Registered Charity No. Her doctor advises they spend the summer by the sea. At their seaside hotel, Luke meets and befriends a gluttonous but friendly boy, Bruno Jenkins.

Luke gets on the bad side of the hotel manager, Mr. Stringer, after his pet mice frighten his maid girlfriend.

Also at the hotel is a convention of witches, masquerading as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The Grand High Witch , who is the all-powerful leader of the world's witches, is attending under the name Eva Ernst.

Luke hides inside the ballroom and spies on the witches' meeting. Eva unveils her latest creation: a magic potion to turn all the world's children into mice.

The potion will be used in confectionery products in sweet shops and candy stores to be purchased using money provided by Eva.

Bruno, who was given the potion earlier, is brought into the room, turns into a mouse and flees. Luke is discovered and runs to Helga in their room but finds her resting after having a diabetes-induced dizzy spell.

The witches seize Luke in the room and take him back to the ballroom, where he is forced to drink the potion and turned into a mouse before escaping.

He finds Bruno and reunites with Helga, who has since recovered. Luke devises a plan to defeat the witches by sneaking into Eva's room to steal a bottle of the potion, then sneaking into the kitchen and put it into the soup for the special RSPCC party.

Luke and Helga try to get Bruno to his parents, but they do not believe her story and are frightened by the mouse. Jenkins orders the soup, though Helga stops him from consuming it.

The Jenkins' finally realise Bruno is a mouse when he speaks up. As the witches enter the dining room, Miss Susan Irvine, Eva's long-suffering and mistreated assistant, quits upon being banned from the celebration.

The formula turns all the witches into mice, and the staff and hotel guests join in killing them, unknowingly ridding England of its witches.

In the midst of the chaos, Helga spots the transformed Eva and traps her under a water jug before helpfully pointing her out to Mr.

Stringer, who chops her in two with a meat cleaver. She then returns Bruno to his bewildered parents.

Luke and Helga return home to where Eva's trunk full of money and an address book of all witches in the United States is delivered, allowing them to plan an operation to wipe out all the witches in America.

That night, Miss Irvine, now a good witch, appears and transforms Luke back to human form, and returns his pet mice and glasses.

She leaves to pay Bruno a visit, as Luke and Helga wave goodbye. The Witches was adapted from the children's book of the same title by British author Roald Dahl.

The early portion of the film was shot in Bergen in Norway. Much of the rest was shot on location in the Headland Hotel [4] situated on the coast in Newquay , Cornwall.

During the shoot, Rowan Atkinson caused a Mr. The flood wrote off much of the production team's electrical equipment on the floor below.

Director Nicolas Roeg later cut scenes he thought would be too scary for children after seeing his young son's reaction to the original cut.

The elaborate makeup effects for Huston's Grand High Witch took six hours to apply, and another six to remove. Huston described a monologue scene she had to do where "I was so uncomfortable and tired of being encased in rubber under hot lights for hours that the lines had ceased to make sense to me and all I wanted to do was cry.

The green vapour used extensively at the end of the film was oil based, and would obscure the contacts in Huston's eyes, which had to be regularly flushed out with water by an expert.

The Witches The Witches The Witches

The witches are all ruled by the extremely vicious and powerful Grand High Witch , who has just arrived in England to organize her worst plot ever.

But an elderly former witch hunter and her young grandson find out about the evil plan and now they must do everything to stop it and defeat the witches.

The Witches was originally published in by Jonathan Cape in London, with illustrations by Quentin Blake like many of Dahl's works.

The book was adapted into an unabridged audio reading by Lynn Redgrave , a stage play and a two-part radio dramatisation for the BBC , a film directed by Nicolas Roeg which starred Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson , a opera by Marcus Paus and Ole Paus , and a film directed by Robert Zemeckis.

The story is narrated from the perspective of an unnamed seven-year-old English boy, who goes to live with his Norwegian grandmother after his parents are killed in a tragic car accident.

The boy loves all his grandmother's stories, but he is especially enthralled by the one about real witches, who she says are horrific creatures who seek to kill human children.

She tells him how to recognize them, and that she is a retired witch hunter she, herself, had an encounter with a witch when she was about her grandson's age, resulting in the loss of her right thumb.

According to the boy's grandmother, a real witch looks exactly like an ordinary woman, but there are ways of telling whether she is a witch: real witches have claws instead of fingernails which they hide by wearing gloves, are bald which they hide by wearing wigs that make them break out in rashes, have square feet with no toes which they hide by wearing uncomfortable pointy shoes, have eyes with pupils that change colours, have blue spit which they use for ink, and have large nostrils which they use to sniff out children; to a witch, a child smells of fresh dogs' droppings; the dirtier the child, the less likely she is to smell them.

As specified in the parents' will, the narrator and his grandmother return to England, where he was born and was in school, and where the house he is inheriting is located.

The grandmother warns the boy to be on his guard, however, since English witches are known to be among the most vicious in the world, notorious for turning children into loathsome creatures so that unsuspecting adults kill them.

The grandmother reveals that witches in different countries have different customs and that, while the witches in each country have close affiliations with one another, they are not allowed to communicate with witches from other countries.

She also tells him about the mysterious Grand High Witch , the feared and diabolical leader of all of the world's witches, who, each year, visits their councils in every country.

Shortly after arriving back in England, while the boy is working on the roof of his tree-house, he sees a strange woman in black staring up at him with an eerie smile, and he quickly registers that she is a witch.

When the witch offers him a snake to tempt him, he climbs further up the tree and stays there, not daring to come down until his grandmother comes looking for him.

This persuades the boy and his grandmother to be especially wary, and he carefully scrutinizes all women to determine whether they might be witches.

When the grandmother becomes ill with pneumonia, the doctor orders her to cancel a planned holiday in Norway. Instead, they go to a luxury hotel in Bournemouth on England's south coast.

The boy is training his pet mice, William and Mary, given to him as a consolation present by his grandmother after the loss of his parents, in the hotel ballroom when the "Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children" show up for their annual meeting.

The boy realizes that this is the yearly gathering of England's witches when one of them reaches underneath her hair to scratch at her scalp with a gloved hand, but he is trapped in the room.

A young woman goes on stage and removes her entire face, which is a mask, revealing herself to be the Grand High Witch herself. She expresses displeasure at the English witches' failure to eliminate enough children and demands that they exterminate the lot of them before the next meeting.

The Grand High Witch unveils her master plan: All of England's witches are to purchase sweet shops with counterfeited money printed by her from a magical money-making machine and give away free sweets and chocolates laced with a drop of her latest creation: "Formula 86 Delayed-Action Mouse-Maker", a magic potion which turns the consumer into a mouse at a specified time set by the potion-maker.

The intent is for the children's teachers and parents to unwittingly kill the transformed children, thus doing the witches' dirty work for them.

To demonstrate the formula's effectiveness, the Grand High Witch brings in a child named Bruno Jenkins, a gluttonous boy lured to the convention hall with the promise of free chocolate.

She reveals that she'd tricked Bruno into eating a chocolate bar laced with the formula the day before, and had set the "alarm" to go off during the meeting.
