Former mime Tati essentially dispenses with dialogue, but while his approach certainly draws on silent comedy, he's less interested in quick-fire slapstick than slowly escalating complications whose intricate choreography often proves more whimsical, or beautiful even, than out-and-out hilarious.

Filled with sunny nostalgia and bittersweet longing, its funny-sad demeanour is quintessential Tati. The film is no bromance though — Carrey plays a manic cable guy who drags newly single Broderick into his twisted fantasy world.

Buy, rent or watch 'The Cable Guy'. Buy, rent or watch 'Top Secret! This is just a musical emergency! Director: Armando Iannucci.

Such is the life of Virgil Starkwell, the remarkably committed and useless criminal who, as a kid. Buy, rent or watch 'Pee-Wee's Big Adventure'.

This is a sophisticated watch — if a little forgiving of male foibles, and more likely to give you an attack of wry smiles than out-and-out guffaws.

Buy, rent or watch 'Heaven Can Wait'. What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny? An unusual entry in a list of comedy movies, you might think — but top comedians voted for it, and here it is.

Buy, rent or watch 'GoodFellas'. I used to rub the dirty parts. Buy, rent or watch 'Bananas'. Overgrown headbanger Wayne and his sidekick Garth may have started out as a pastiche of no-way-dude metalhead doofuses, but their first full-length movie goes out of its way to transform them into rounded, loveable, very nearly believable characters.

Buy, rent or watch 'Wayne's World'. Perhaps the best British comedy since the heyday of Python, since John Cleese deliberately attempted to move away from satirical silliness and back to a more inclusive, plot-driven, unmistakably British brand of comic caper.

He even went so far as to hire year-old Ealing stalwart Charles Crichton to direct. The result is a film which, like its slippery American heroine, is madly in love with language, from tongue-teasingly delicious sarcasm to some truly outrageous swearing.

Buy, rent or watch 'A Fish Called Wanda'. That is, until you notice just how flawlessly written and ferociously performed it is.

Robert De Niro wisely plays it straight as the bail bondsman tracking down mob informant Charles Grodin, who proceeds to whinge and whine all the way from New York to LA.

The pace is relentless, the supporting players are brilliantly sketched and the script cuts like a scalpel.

Buy, rent or watch 'Midnight Run'. It's much more than a teen movie, however - for a film that's over 20 year old, 'Clueless' still holds a lot of cultural clout, whether it's inspiring music videos, fashion trends or on-going cries of 'As if!

Buy, rent or watch 'Clueless'. This jet-black farce about serial-killing old dears was years ahead of its time.

He shifts into another gear when his sinister murderous brother Raymond Massey enters the fray. Plotted with precision, delivered with panache, still a model of controlled comic hysteria.

So it was quite literally the drink that killed him. The set-up of this family comedy might be slushy and very, very silly, but it showcases Robin Williams at his most anarchic.

What comes next is a whole lot of meddling. Buy, rent or watch 'Mrs Doubtfire'. Ask a film historian: what was the first ever romcom? Buy, rent or watch 'It Happened One Night'.

As the first Pixar animated feature film, 'Toy Story' set out the studio's M. Jokes and references that only grownups will 'get' elevates the story of the rivalry between toy cowboy Woody voiced by Tom Hanks and Buzz Lightyear Tim Allen , the new toy on the block.

It's the perfect combination of action and adventure that packs genuine heart and buckets of lols. Buy, rent or watch 'Toy Story'.

Forget the underwhelming remake with Brendan Fraser and Liz Hurley. Dudley Moore is a sad-sack cook mooning after a waitress Eleanor Bron and Peter Cook plays the devil, who procures his soul in exchange for seven wishes.

He wears his seat belt in a drive-in movie. Unrepentant slob Oscar Walter Matthau and cleaning-obsessive neurotic Felix Jack Lemmon make a perfect match as two old pals driven by marriage troubles to sharing a Manhattan apartment.

Still, the obvious theatricality allows the performers to play to their contrasting strengths, whipping up a frenzy of love-hate exasperation underpinned by life-long friendship.

Buy, rent or watch 'The Odd Couple'. It all goes horribly wrong, of course, setting off a whole series of inventive, exquisitely timed sight-gags as the hapless twosome wind up hiding out in their own attic.

Short, sharp and delightful. Nicholas Cage appears as a bumbling convenience-store robber who falls in love with his prison officer Edwina Hunter.

After fertility problems they decide to kidnap a just-born quintuplet. Thus starts a steamrolling caper that tumbles through a madcap depiction of the American Deep South.

Buy, rent or watch 'Raising Arizona'. The vulgarity is tumultuous, the wit pointed and the performances impeccably judged.

Proof that transferring a great sitcom to the big screen need not be difficult, difficult, lemon difficult. Buy, rent or watch 'In the Loop'.

Buy, rent or watch 'The King of Comedy'. Shame about the sequels. Buy, rent or watch 'The Producers'.

Some films create an entire world, with its own rules and its own geography. The grounds and environs of Rushmore Academy are at once familiar and strange, populated by bored millionaires and Scottish vagabonds, lost aquatic heroes and their grieving lovers, gruff headmasters and winsome Asian teens, and of course Max Fischer, arguably the most complex, original, loveable but infuriating movie creation of the past three decades.

Buy, rent or watch 'Rushmore'. Woody comes to both bury and praise his hero Danny Rose in this lyrical note to the dimmer lights of the Great White Way.

It would be an easy world to mock, but Allen gives it a generous, mournful, affectionate send-off that pays far richer, far funnier dividends.

Is this a case of two white comedians exploiting the heroes of soul music to make themselves look cool? Or is the film actually a loving tribute to a great American art form?

The truth is, a bit of both. Buy, rent or watch 'The Blues Brothers'. But director Howard Hawks had the inspired brainwave of turning the male Hildy into a female firebrand played by Rosalind Russell — detonating one of the most incendiary, yet affectionate, sex-war duels in cinema history.

Buy, rent or watch 'His Girl Friday'. This social misfit makes for a terrific underdog hero, and when he decides his skill is dancing, things get really funny.

Vote for Pedro! Buy, rent or watch 'Napoleon Dynamite'. Consequently, anyone seeing this expecting wall-to-wall Sellers may be a mite disappointed.

But hey, it knocks spots off the awful remake. Buy, rent or watch 'The Pink Panther'. Just let your Soul Glo Buy, rent or watch 'Coming to America'.

Arriving in the countryside, priggish Keith Roger Sloman turns up his nose at non-free-range eggs this was 40 years ago , while his wife Candice Marie Alison Steadman might not be as floaty and submissive as she first appears.

Squirm, and squirm some more. Buy, rent or watch 'Nuts in May'. This story of Buddy the 'elf', a human raised in the north pole by Santa and his real elves, and his journey to find his real dad is fast becoming a festive family staple.

The juxtaposition between Ferrell's Buddy, a guileless simpleton who accidentally causes havoc and destruction, and his stiff-lipped and gruff businessman of a father provides genuine moments of humour and heart.

Meanwhile, director Jon Favreau delivers any cornball sentiments with an adept balance of irony and sincerity. Buy, rent or watch 'Elf'. In a world long before health and safety, here is a man literally risking life and limb to present some of the most astonishing sight gags ever performed, from ducking cannon balls to flipping railroad ties to chucking an entire, full-size locomotive off a bridge.

Seven years of college down the drain. Might as well join the fucking Peace Corps. Buy, rent or watch 'National Lampoon's Animal House'.

Both Ephron and Reiner sank into Hollywood slush, but they were always headed that way. And at least they left one perfect — and I do mean perfect — movie before they jumped.

Buy, rent or watch 'When Harry Met Sally I saw Mrs Claypool first. Even funnier than the overblown Queen album of the same name, this was the Marxes at their anarchic apogee, an excoriating dissection of snot-nosed, jazz-age, high-society wags that contained some of their most memorable comic riffs.

The story, in which Groucho falls in with a moneyed has-been and has to assist a struggling opera company, plays second fiddle to an intense barrage of puns, tongue-twisters and wisecracks.

Buy, rent or watch 'A Night at the Opera'. Previous beloved Brit comedy duos — from Eric and Ernie to Patsy and Edina — faltered making the transition from the small to the silver screen.

This is not a film about survival: this genuinely suspenseful rom-zom-com is about respect and the getting of it. Buy, rent or watch 'Shaun of the Dead'.

Too cute. Too butch. Aw, shucks. Lawrence Feings. Forest Lorenston. His name is James Jesenthon. Lawrence Fell.

Lawrence Jesterton. Buy, rent or watch 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'. Did someone say fish in a barrel? Buy, rent or watch 'Zoolander'.

Co-written by Richard Pryor and co-starring Gene Wilder , it remains a riot of bad taste. John Wayne was offered a cameo role, Brooks once claimed in an interview.

After reading and considering the script, the iconic Cowboy declined the opportunity. Amen to that. Buy, rent or watch 'Blazing Saddles'.

An irresistible feelgood charmer. Buy, rent or watch 'The Castle'. Sure, there are some of the bad-taste trappings, but it more than outgrows them with its silly-but-smart script and the lively direction from 'Freaks and Geeks' legend Paul Feig.

Even better, though, is the note-perfect casting. Kristen Wiig's performance as Annie is raucously hilarious her impersonation of a penis is a highlight , as is Rose Byrne, whose deadpan performance as Helen is severely underrated.

Mostly, though, it works because the relationships between the women feel real and honest. Buy, rent or watch 'Bridesmaids'. Buy, rent or watch 'Play It Again, Sam'.

Looking back, the concept of a guy dressing up as a woman to get a better job is a vaguely uncomfortable one, and its approach to feminism is badly out-dated.

Now hang on while I fix my lippy. Buy, rent or watch 'Tootsie'. When New York is invaded by ghastly ghouls, who you gonna call? You know the answer: four self-styled Ghostbusters ready to dash in and zap the spirits into oblivion.

Buy, rent or watch 'Ghostbusters'. Framed as a slapstick sitcom and built on solid satirical foundations, Morris and his co-writers based much of their script on evidence and court transcripts relating to real cases of DIY terrorism.

In the years since, the film has become a regular reference point in the news as life — tragically and comically — continues to imitate art.

Buy, rent or watch 'Four Lions'. What to say when a film is creeping towards its first century but still feels as timely, relevant and subversive as it did on release?

Book, rent or watch 'Duck Soup'. It takes some kind of genius to make a comedy out of a thermonuclear holocaust — and arch pessimist and master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick was that very genius.

So much more than just a jolly fat man, John Candy was one of those performers who seemed to have comedy right down in his bones.

When he added a pinch of pathos, the results could be devastating. Buy, rent or watch 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles'.

Buy, rent or watch 'Trading Places'. Billy Wilder delivers a pacy, racy cross-dressing farce, full of gags and sauce. Buy, rent or watch 'Some Like It Hot'.

Buy, rent or watch 'The Naked Gun'. Buy, rent or watch 'The Big Lebowski'. A time when a man was not judged by the contents of his character but on the raw, unchecked ferocity of his cologne, the lustre of his moustache and the quantity of leather-bound books that lined the mahogany shelves of his apartment.

It takes a lot of front to keep a straight face while winding up gullible members of the public, but Sacha Baron Cohen is a master — as proven by this wince-inducing odyssey across America.

Travelling under the guise of a radio host from Kazakhstan, Cohen trawls the byways of the USA, inveigling himself into the welcoming arms of locals before shocking them with an outrageous arsenal of faked Kazakh cultural mores.

Although a damn fine comedy at heart, the film also serves as a sobering reminder of the sheer simmering level of racism and misogyny among the very same folks that got Trump elected.

Well, Reg and co. As concerned with skewering the twin pomposities of mainstream action cinema and liberal Hollywood as it is with the terrorist armies of Durkadurkastan and North Korea, the film borders on genius in its self-aware use of wooden marionettes, particularly in the notorious sex scene.

Buy, rent or watch 'Team America: World Police'. To be this stupid, you have to be an absolute genius. Buy, rent or watch 'The Jerk'. What makes it stick?

Buy, rent or watch 'Groundhog Day'. What follows is an anatomy of their relationship. Buy, rent or watch 'Annie Hall'.

The story is rooted in purest farce, as the Three Wise Men arrive at the wrong manger and unsuspecting everyman Brian Cohen is declared the Messiah.

What a dizzying achievement this is. Leslie Nielsen steals the film as an onboard doctor. Buy, rent or watch 'Airplane! You're asking, how much more funny could this be?

And the answer is none. Burr and Buscemi in particular are delightfully believable firefighters who become quasi-father figures; It's not as corny as it sounds, but it's got that trademark Apatow sweetness to make this an easy viewing.

Rogen perfectly plays two roles here: He's both Herschel, the Jewish factory worker who wakes up years later after getting brined in a pickle vat it's as weird as it sounds, but just go with it and his ancestor, app developer Ben.

What follows is a fish out of water tale with a twist—the film skewers everything from Twitter and hipsters to Hershel's century-old ignorance and callousness.

It can be a bit inconsistent the film tries to shift between barbed and wholesome, and the comedy sometimes comes off as too broad , but it has enough to say that it's salty-sweet where it counts.

This one hits hilariously—and sometimes painfully—close to home for me. Kate wrote a book! And the cover and sales are terrible.

She's an author! She gets invited to do a book reading by her old professor—Clement, perfectly playing that professor who's just on the wrong side of creepy.

Then she just kind of It's a sweet and honest look at the stresses and pains of being a something and a creative professional who just doesn't feel like she can face the world ahead.

It's also a pretty relevant quarantine watch, TBH. It's so snarky and has a deliriously happy ending without letting its fallible heroine off the hook for her often-terrible behavior.

Beyond the effervescent Anya Taylor-Joy, consider at how many incredible actors are in this. Bill Nighy? Funny in everything! Josh O'Connor?

Yes, that guy from The Crown! Miranda Hart? The best part of Spy! And it all came together brilliantly—I think my favorite part might have been Johnny Flynn as a very sexy Mr.

If you're looking for light and fluffy, this is the perfect pick. Post- Harry Potter , Radcliffe has done some weird and wacky stuff and even when it doesn't work, I always appreciate the risk-taking.

This feels like one of the ones that actually works. Right now on Rotten Tomatoes it's juuuust on the side of fresh in terms of positive reviews.

All-around loser Miles gets forced into a gladiator fight to the death—guns are literally stapled to his hands.

He has to team up with Nix utter badass Weaving, who totally nailed it in Ready or Not to save his girlfriend, the day, etc. Into it. Kyle and Mike are two best friends who share a tight bond What comes next is a story of friendship, frustration, and love, packed alongside jokes funny that are relatable enough to make you feel like you know the characters in your real life.

It's not often we see movies focused on male friendships, so The Climb is a breath of fresh air, in some cases quite literally.

Ugh, this looks so cute. April Marks gets dumped by her high school boyfriend Sprouse, playing against type with a long and terrible haircut , only to fall in platonic love with his new girlfriend Liberato.

Think of it like Booksmart, but more of a love triangle. It includes badass music, witty banter, and killer supporting characters.

It's not regular teen angst, it's cool teen angst. You should watch. Starring: Courtney B. Part drama, part comedy I also included this on my best drama movies list , don't me , this is a sweet story about following your dreams.

Oh, and it just so happens to have some of the funniest banter in a film this year. What happens when you work at your dad's restaurant Vance has never been better but you want to become a sommelier?

Athie is exceptional , hilarious, and irritated at having to explain what a sommelier is, and he is quietly determined. There isn't a wrong note in the whole thing.

Everyone's favorites, Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, play a couple who find themselves caught up in a crime unexpectedly.

As the two of them try to solve the case to clear their name, they get into predictably wacky, terrible situations.

TBH, the fact that these two are costars and singularly funny all on their own means this is worth the watch. Critics were a bit divided, but pretty much everyone can agree its two stars were the best part.

Count me in. Release Date: Originally May 8, now August 28, I love seeing Dev Patel on any screen so, seeing him in The Personal History of David Copperfield— based on Charles Dickens's most famous novel—will be my Christmas, birthday, and half-birthday present wrapped up all in one.

Much like the book it's modeled after, the movie will follow the life of David Copperfield as he sets out to become a writer, and promises to be as sharp-tongued as ever.

Stay for the supporting cast, who are having so much fun that you're having fun just by being in the same room together.

This has been delayed several times but did premiere in the UK to some pretty incredible reviews so this will be the best late summer present I needed.

The show and its sweet characters are an indelible part of my teen years I maintain that you can still totally find it funny as an adult.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was both critically loved and a box office hit, so the chances of a third movie were always good. How can you not love it?

This film is many things—a drama, a rom-com, a song about music and music-making—but it's also surprisingly funny. Raphael, who elevates every movie she's in, adds the much-needed jolt of pure funny to push it from fine to great.

And Ice Cube's playing pretty much the same character as in 21 Jump Street , but it totally works. I'm all for the serious roles Steve Carell has been doing lately, but nothing's more enjoyable than watching him in a comedy.

Written and directed by Jon Stewart, this film follows Gary, a Democratic strategist Carell , as he sets out to convince a retired marine Chris Cooper to run for mayor.

Then the Republicans send Faith Rose Byrne, the best to shake things up. The criticism that the film is so unlike our current political situation is actually, arguably, its greatest strength—a little humor and heart amongst the cynicism.

If you know anything about Eurovision, you'll know that it's pure, campy, ridiculous fun—and perfect fodder for a comedy.

Ferrell's not doing anything he hasn't already done before as a kooky but lovable goofball. It's more McAdams' time to shine, as she absolutely did in the underrated and terrific Game Night.

But, truly, the standout is Stevens, who really gets what movie he's in, and is acting all the way to the rafters as the OTT icon that the movie needs.

The film is loooong, but stick with it. Simmons, Peter Gallagher.

Sarah Milioti and Nyles Samberg hit it off at a wedding, but then amidst a late-night hookup, she gets entrapped in an infinite time loop—doomed to relive the same day over and over.

Nyles, who's been stuck for a while, seems content to just let his days play out in endless repeating boredom, but Sarah's determined to get out.

It's really Milioti's movie, and she's not afraid to throw herself into it sometimes literally. I've loved her since How I Met Your Mother and 30 Rock , and up until now she's been criminally underrated as a comedian.

Plus: An infinite time loop is just about the perfect analogy for quarantine. Release date: Originally July 10, , now March 5, I might as well put this in the "most anticipated movies ever" category.
